Stand-Up Comedy 201 is simply for lack of a better title to describe a second crucial step in your career as a professional stand-up comedian. If I had the ability to write it all down then I would go ahead and just write a book on the subject and then I would be an author. That requires time and preparation that I do not have because my future is in what I am doing right now…comedy
201 is where you will need to take your career to the next level. Take a deep breath and let’s see if we are where we need to be in order to do this. Either way, this will be a good review as well as a, “I know what is in store for me next section” if you are not quite there yet.
- Have you dedicated yourself to your future where you now have 14 minutes of pure material to do a 10-minute gig?
- Do you make the time to get on a stage every week at least one time even if it is not a paying gig?
- Have you rubbed shoulders with enough people that you have made yourself a person of interest and a person to be remembered?
- Do you have a Bio written that expresses who you are and what you want others to know about you? There can be hints of comedy in it, but also professional wording that says you are more than a comedian. Remember, this is a business; your video is where they will see your talent.
- Do you have the ability to put together a resume that lets others know that you have played at certain comedy clubs, done a couple charity benefits, colleges, or wherever you where able to stand-up on a stage and perform.
- Do you have a video that is easy to find, either on a website like this one or on a DVD? Don’t link a booking agent to YouTube people. It is ok if your webpage has a video on it that goes there but you want to show initiative in having professionalism in place.
- Don’t worry about the headshot if you don’t have one because in Stand-Up 201.2 you are going to have to have professional ones done regardless.
So how did we do? Do you have most of the things above done already and are ready to move to the next stage? If so then let’s get moving to the next page with that arrow down there and see what the next list of chores are to work on.
Chores! Oh %$#!, I’m a comic not a worker!
One does not exist without the other; I can promise you that…
