“Common Misconceptions”
A common misconception that corporate comedians/annes are caught up in is that you have to prepare a skit that is tailored to the corporate world as a corporate entertainer.
Unless they are trying to roast an executive in the office for his or her birthday then they more than likely want to take a few minutes and get away from the BS and still be able to relate to what you are saying. They all have regular lives, even though they may never have pulled the rope on a lawnmower. Poke fun at family issues, cats and dogs and traffic or something.
Personally, I would leave the office BS out of it. If they ask you to do a specific type of skit then you need to get a bigger purse than normal because you are going to have to study the company and hit it big on the fly if you got the talent to do so.
“Caution!”
If you do not feel you can pull it off then you are best to leave it alone. I’m not trying to say that you can’t, but you know your own abilities and you do not want to have the bomb night exposure, and risk future gigs.
Before you can even get started in the world of corporate entertainment, you are going to need a talent agent that is willing take you on and they are going to need certain things from you to market your act. You are going to need the following basics and even more depending on individual requirements:
- A 3.5 minute video clip of your best clean humor available (nobody will watch any further)
- A business card
- A website so that you can show some type of credibility
- A headshot, even if you are extremely hideous looking which is why I hate to give out my own pictures.
- A resume with testimonies and write-ups
There may be additional things to consider that you will be asked for, so be prepared and get them to the agent as soon as you can and do it personally if possible. I would never fill out an application for employment with any company in the world for any reason without an interview with the boss. However, that may not be an option in this case. Don’t forget we have the ability to do video conference now so don’t rule it out as an option.
“Bottom Line”
Corporate comedians/annes are the same as club comedian/anne with the ability to deliver a line without offending anyone. To some of you that may sound easy, and may be what you already do. To others, it has now gone from being fun, to being a job. I’m just here to give you the info, you do with it as you please. There is no right or wrong answers, and there will not be a quiz at the end of the night.
