“Corporate comedians/annes are by far the best paid in the business with the best job security when it comes to being a professional comic. A lot of the reason the pay is much better has to do a little with supply and demand. There are very few clean comedians/annes that can write, let alone deliver clean humor in the world today so they are a rare breed when it comes to a corporation in need of a corporate entertainer.
The reason it’s a job with security is even when the rest of the world is doing poorly as far as income, there is always plenty of $$$ to throw around in the corporate world. The world of comedy is strong when the morale is weak, because we need to be able to laugh our way through it. However, the amount of people that can pay the tab at the end of the night is far, far, different.
You can easily earn $1000 for a 45 minute act in the corporate world and the $$$ just goes up from there, but as a club comic you will get zero to a couple hundred if you are lucky enough to be the opening act. That is a huge wage difference as you can see. However, not everyone is going to be able to pull off being a corporate comedian/anne.
PG-13
To be a corporate comedian/anne you have to be able to keep the level of language and content at about a PG-13. There can be no F-ing this and F-ing that and you cannot talk about how your new profession in masturbation is cumming. (Pun intended)
Switching from an R-Rated, to a PG-13 comic is hard to say the least. The same rule does not apply when you are going from a corporate comedian/anne to a club comedian/anne. So long as you can deliver the gig, you can do it clean in any environment. Some jokes though, will lose their effect if you don’t have the curse words and adult humor included. You cannot use those in your corporate skits or the punch is gone. Don’t discard them, save them for the other venue.
I say enjoy the best of both worlds, if that is what you do. I personally do not curse, but I have some extreme borderline stuff that I wouldn’t dare share with your mother. I have to admit though; I have shared it with mine. If you know you are going to be in a town then book a club for the practice and exposure. It will not hurt your other career as a corporate comedian/anne in the least.
If you cannot use it in a 10th grade high school environment, don’t use it at all as a corporate comedian/anne. I am not telling you to stop what you are doing when it comes to your material. What I am saying, is that you can only do certain material if you want to be paid the big dog dollars while still off the TV circuit, and then there is the material that you have for the crowds at the comedy clubs and bars. Both are great, one just pays a bit more.
