Open Mic Comedy Night

Looking for an Open Mic Comedy Night in your area, but there are none? The closest one is 2 hours away and you have to hope that you can get on the list by the time you get off work, and drive there on a Wed. or Thurs. night. “I’ll be back at 1am Hun…don’t wait up!”

Your boss just loves the idea of your becoming a comedian because when you can barely crawl back to work the next day, he knows you will soon need a new carrier. He just may not have let you in on that secret yet.

I’m going to tell you how to go about having an Open Mic Comedy Night in your town and step up a notch in your young career. That is if you are savvy enough and business minded enough to do so. Start your own Open Mic Comedy Night! That is a concept that is a realistic one and I’ll tell you why. I myself, as well as many others have done it.

Here’s how it works

There are many clubs or bars in your area that do not even open on certain nights. Most of them are closed on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday for sure and sometimes even on Wed. I have a place in my town that is closed so much that I’m thinking about getting a comedy night going there just because I’m sick of seeing it closed so often. I don’t have the time for another project on the plate but I’m sure one of my fellow comedians/annes will be willing to run the show.

Let’s say that you have a place that is open on Wed. or Thurs. But those who actually show up are the town drunks and those who came in to use the bathroom. You can convince the owner of that club to have an Open Mic Comedy Night so that he can gain more business. Let him know that you will take care of the details of getting a group of comedians/annes to perform, if he will provide a mic, a speaker, and a space.

Set it up a few weeks in advance, get business cards from the club, go to the open mic 2 hours from your home, and advertise for about a month to all of the other comedians. Chances are that they travel just as you do, to do an open mic whenever and wherever they can.

Not only will you soon be able to be respected by the owner of the club, but you now will step up to the plate as an Emcee for the scheduled events. This is a notch on the belt as well as an additional line on your resume. If you are good, that owner or manager will give you a great reference when you are ready to move forward.

Talking about moving forward, let’s say you do this for long enough that comedians from all around are coming on a regular basis. Maybe it is time now to do a venue at least 1 time per month where you will be able to be a feature act or a headliner. Do not think that any of this is outside your power to do. Being a professional comic is going to take self-management, so if you have that, then you have the ability to do this as well.
